Respiratory Interventional Procedures

At times, investigation or management of respiratory conditions requires a respiratory interventional procedure.

Bronchoscopy

Bronchoscopies are usually performed at Northern Beaches Hospital, but can be arranged at other centres if required. Bronchoscopic procedures include flexible bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound and biopsy, and endobronchial procedures including insertion of valves, stents or cyrotherapy.

Pleural Procedures

Some conditions require pleural aspiration or insertion of an intercostal catheter under ultrasound guidance. Depending on the clinical scenario pleural procedures may occur as an outpatient or inpatient at Northern Beaches Hospital. Your respiratory specialist will assist you to navigate the process.

Lung Biopsy

At times a lung biopsy may be required to investigate an abnormality found on lung imaging eg a nodule. Biopsy may occur via CT guidance in radiology or via bronchoscopy. Your Respiratory specialist will discuss with you and arrange the best option. We understand the uncertainty of having a lung nodule and ensure that review and investigations occur promptly.
